Mobile Application Development was taken to a whole new level as Android application development made its way into the world of mobiles. Mobiles turned into smartphones as iPhone application development and blackberry application development came into existence making smartphones an integral part of our work and personnel lives.
Google’s Android brought in the advantage of multitasking along with the support of multiple screens or desktops. being an open source platform, made Android a favorite for mobile application development.
Its latest version-Android 4.0 is set to bring in another wave of improvements that can take android application development to greater heights. This new version has been built as a complete rethink of Android’s image and works on the principle of Enchant me, Simplify my Life, and Make Me Awesome. it can be seen on the phones, tablets and computers too.
We take a look at what this latest version of Google’s OS holds in its bag of improvement.
Unified UI framework- This version brings in new UI tools for the developers, facilitating development of refined and innovative apps. The interface element along with APIs such as fragments, content loaders, Action Bar, etc of the earlier Android 3.x have been retained along with introduction of new elements. This facilitates development as it works across the range of Android devices leading to simplified code and consistent design practices.
Communication and sharing- This version has included some powerful tools to make communicating and sharing even better. Profile data, contacts and calendar events from any user’s activities or social networks can be integrated via a shared social provider and API that provides a unified store for these activities. other APIs that assist in this are Calendar API and Visual Voicemail API.
Direct Connect- Another new feature that provides great scope of innovation for developers is the Wi-Fi Direct connection. using it developers can search and connect to nearby devices straight away with the help of a framework API. This makes android application development even more interesting as now developers have a free hand to make their apps more innovative. This is because through Wi-Fi Direct, media content can be streamed from various devices, files and photos can be shared as well as connection with groups can also be established.
Better Camera- The camera gets bigger and better with Android 4.0. Features such as ZSL exposure, image zoom, and continuous focus provide a lot of scope for developers to experiment and make their apps better. Also these features significantly improve the quality of still and video images. The newer version also allows setting of custom metering regions in a camera preview along with a face-detection facility that simplifies image focusing and processing.
Better security- Authentication management is easier for apps with Android 4.0. Apps can store and recover private keys easily via the new keychain API and encrypted storage. Memory management related problems have also been taken care of by introducing Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR). ASLR enables protection of third party applications as it improves memory management and resolves the issues relating to it.
